Built by a Dutch Merchant to store spices more than 300 years ago, this warehouse is now home to a 4 Roomed boutique hotel with a Restaurant & Bar. Although its address is no. 9 Church Cross Street, the Lighthouse Street entrance is easier to find. It retains most of its original infrastructure including the exposed coral walls and high ceilings, but our labour of love has transformed every nook and cranny of this place into a stylish and homely boutique hotel with some of the most memorable rooms in Galle. This is also where you’ll find the Fortazela Restaurant. The sunken in courtyard with both indoor and outdoor areas can accommodate up to fifty or sixty people and can be reserved for private functions. However the space has its cosy corners for people who are looking for a more intimate scene.
The two Turquoise rooms are on the ground floor and are the smaller two of the four bedrooms. They come with all the trappings of boutique luxury including air conditioning, four poster beds, high quality mattresses, Crisp linen, mosquito nets and en-suite facilities. Both rooms are doubles, of which one is has a twin bed arrangement.
Up the spiral stairs on the first floor is the Library room. With shutters that open out to Lighthouse Street, this is the perfect place to sit back and take in the life of the Galle fort as it passes by your window. With its high timbered ceiling and large round window casting natural light in, the Library Room is a large and airy double room furnished with king sized bed in which comfort take pride of place. The en-suite bathroom has a shuttered window that let’s in a wonderful through-breeze.
The Master Bedroom is our largest bedroom. It also has a view down to Lighthouse street through shuttered windows that open underneath the columned façade. A small round window brings daylight in from the courtyard side. With simple and elegant furnishings, en-suite bathroom and a cool, airy quality to it, the Master Bedroom is an ode to fine living.
