Charming Dutch period building
Within the Court Square of the Galle Fort sits a charming Dutch period building that houses No.1A Court Square, an exceptional one-bedroom suite overlooking the Magistrate’s Square, with all the luxuries, comforts and aesthetics of contemporary living.
Built in the 18th Century, this property of a bygone era retains its heritage in every architectural and decorative detail. No.1A was originally the chamber to an eminent family of lawyers, the Weerasooriyas’ from the colonial south since 1826.
The Building has now been restored as a luxurious suite by celebrated architect Channa Daswatte as one of his magical restorations within Galle Fort.
The shade from the large canopy of 150 year-old Rain trees complements the fascinating views from the balcony of the suite, while the eternal cool breeze of the turquoise blue Indian Ocean caresses the Court Square from across the Galle Bay where the historic harbor and scenic hills of Bonavista Rumassala sit in the distance.
The suite looks out on the majestic Dutch period cinnamon warehouse which houses the Maritime Museum, the Magistrate Courts and the former Dutch Hospital, now restored to its original architectural form, complete with elegant restaurants, trendy bars and a shopping arcade.
The luxurious bedroom chamber, graced with an elegant king size four poster bed and light marble walls, adjoins a Moroccan style en-suite shower room. A period staircase from the bedroom, leads up to a bright comfortable sitting room, with a fabulous glass paneled skylight. Historical art and ornate mirrors decorate the walls and a cozy balcony which overlooks the court square completes the space.
1A’s facilities include a well stocked mini bar, a tea & coffee tray, and a Bose music system. Breakfast is served at Fortaleza’s restaurant which is a short walk away or a tuk tuk can be arranged to collect you.
